How do I enter a chemical reaction?

Use a reaction arrow such as -> between reactants and products, for example CH4 + O2 -> CO2 + H2O.

Why are coefficients changed instead of subscripts?

Coefficients change the amount of each substance without changing the chemical identity of the compounds. Subscripts are part of the compound formula and should not be altered to balance a reaction.
